Who it’s for: Honeymooners looking for an underrated escape and avid snorkelers

On your to-do list: While Mauritius may be known for its crystal clear waters (best seen while snorkeling in Blue Bay Marine Park) and pristine beaches, like Le Morne (where you should stop for a sunset cocktail at Zest Bar & Lounge), there’s more to the island. You can take a leisurely hike through Black River Gorges National Park, where detailed signage will help you find the perfect trail, or tackle Chamarel Seven Colored Earths's vibrant sand dunes. And in town, be sure to visit the lively Central Market to savor roti and gato pima (fritters made from yellow split peas) on a guided tour.

When to go: January through March, for better weather, even though prices may be higher

Who it’s for: Couples seeking a romantic getaway and solo travelers who want to feel like they have the island all to themselves

On your to-do list: When it comes to the Maldives, let’s be honest, you’re going to spend 99 percent of your time at your resort, relaxing and going on organized day trips to snorkeling spots or private islands. But if you can, leave some time at one end of your trip to see what else the Maldives has to offer, especially in Malé, where you can visit the Grand Friday Mosque, a 17th-century icon, or get a taste of local life (and some of the islands’ freshest seafood) at the Fish Market
